playa hater

“Kelly photo credit: Vintage advertisement of actress Kelly LeBrock telling viewers 'Don't hate me because I'm beautiful' for Pantene shampoo

Definition: (noun phrase) a jealous person

Example: Jeff criticized me for dating three women at the same time, but I think he’s just a playa hater.

Quote:

“You see, there are two kind of people in the world today
We have, the playaz, and we have, the playa haters
Please don't hate me because I'm beautiful baby.”
- The Notorious B.I.G., from the song Playa Hater

This song from the 1997 album Life After Death gets some of its lyrics from an unusual source. In the 1980s, model Kelly LeBrock told viewers, “Don’t hate me because I’m beautiful!” in an annoying (but memorable) series of advertisements for Pantene shampoo, shown above.

A playa (also player) is a man who has a lot of girlfriends at the same time. A playa hater (sometimes just hater) envies another person's success. In an interview in this month’s Vibe magazine, actor Jamie Foxx recounted how he had needed to explain the expression to his Collateral costar Tom Cruise, who hadn’t heard it before.

That’s probably because this expression was once used primarily by rappers, but it is starting to appear more and more in the mainstream. This week on the TV drama Crossing Jordan, Woody Hoyt, a naïve police officer from the country, thought that others were envious of him because he was being honored at a special ceremony. To respond, he quoted rapper Too Short: “Don’t hate the player—hate the game.”
