In the 1960s and 70s, this item of clothing was known as hot pants. Hot has long been slang for “sexy” and decades before this fashion was introduced, a person was said to be a hot pants if they experienced strong sexual desire.
The fashion expression changed with The Dukes of Hazzard, which was on television from 1979 to 1985. The series featured the adventures of Southern cousins Bo and Luke Duke as they outwitted enemies Boss Hogg and Sheriff Roscoe P. Coltrane. The boys’ cousin Daisy Duke was played by Catherine Bach, whose sexy short-short shorts were the subject of many teenage boys’ fantasies.
Like The Brady Bunch, Starsky and Hutch, and Bewitched, this vintage TV show is now being remade as a movie and several stars have competed for Bach’s role. And though Mariah Carey has probably gotten the most attention for wearing daisy dukes in the last few years, her acting skills have not gotten much critical acclaim and it looks like Daisy will be played by Jessica Simpson.
