Scissor sisters

Hi.

What does scissor sisters mean? I know its a lesbian term.

Thanx a sister.

Dear Reader,

Scissors is a term for a lesbian sexual position. And the Scissor Sisters, as you are probably aware, the name of a popular rock group with a 70s disco style. The name is no coincidence—the band was originally called Dead Lesbian and the Fibrillating Scissor Sisters.

The five member group has only one woman, singer Ana Matronic, and she is not a lesbian. However, three of the band members are openly gay, and are none are shy about sexuality or sexual orientation. The video for Filthy/Gorgeous, for example, which you can watch on their website, shows a private club filled with wild partiers in sexually suggestive poses, many of them in drag (wearing clothing of the opposite sex).

But back to the slang—sisters in this context are lesbians. And as described by the band's guitarist, Del Marquis, in the Sydney Star Observer, scissors is “a sexual position two women get into to bump. If you make two scissors with your hands and then, you know …Maybe draw a diagram in your newspaper to help. ”They didn’t publish an illustration and neither will we, but in this position, the women are facing each other and their legs are arranged so that their genitals can rub together.

If you lack imagination, feel free to print this page and cut out the band's scissor leg logos to see how two women might fit together for mutual stimulation.

Your pal,

AC
