Popeyes
Dear AC,
Could you please explain the term popeye’s as used here (www.soulbounce.com):
"OK, that's all I got, folks. I'm gonna put this one in the ‘wait and see’ category. BeyoncĂ© may actually dig deep inside and pull this one off. At least now she will get to embrace her inner big girl and fatten up for the role of the plus-sized singer. Popeye's here she comes!”
Not sure if it's sexual or maybe referring to eyes popping out of one’s head?
Leshia
Dear Leshia,
Sadly, both of those would be more exciting than the truth. As you know, the post was about Beyoncé Knowles playing Etta James in the movie Cadillac Records, and whether the young singer would be a success in the role.
As they rightly pointed out, Knowles would need to gain weight if she wanted to look more like James, who was somewhat chubby. The solution? Popeyes Chicken and Biscuits, a popular restaurant chain specializing in fried chicken and other non-slimming food. (Note that there is no apostrophe in their name, although there should be one!) Although Popeyes has locations around the US, it started out in Louisiana and Texas--where Knowles is from--and it is said to be one of her favorite foods. One gossip page reported the chicken was even served at her wedding.
According to US magazine, Knowles gained twenty pounds for the movie. On the other hand, she reportedly lost twenty pounds to play Deena, the Diana Ross character in Dreamgirls (2006), so she may have just put back on the weight she lost. Fat for movie stars is still thin for ordinary mortals.
Your pal,
A. C. Kemp
